The classic myth links Mykonos to Hercules. As the story goes, during the battle of the Titans, the legendary hero, who fights on the side of his father Zeus, succeeds in defeating the local Giants and imprisons them under the Mykonian rocky terrain, in Houlakia Bay. The name of the island in this narrative indicates a ‘stone pile’ or ‘stony place’. Likewise when ancient Strabo recounts the murder of the giants, he- rather prophetically- writes “all under a Mykonos’, which loosely translates to ‘(we are) all in the same boat’. This description seems to fit today’s multicultural, cosmopolitan Mykonos like a glove.
Of course in this “all” included are VIP’s and A listers, international party people, glamorous jet setters -and everyone in between.
For the emblematic whitewashed island, has been for several decades now the stamping ground of the world’s crème de la crème.
Several factors led to this phenomenon. Indeed as early as the 1930’’s, the exciting news of the excavations in Delos coupled with rumors about an undiscovered paradise nearby, begin to circulate among bourgeois and bohemian circles. Respected artists, poets, writers and politicians discover Mykonos, and fall in love with its unspoiled beauty and pristine charm. On the years to come, their example is followed by European royalty and American stars. From Liz Taylor, to Marlon Brando, Princess Soraya or Jackie O, everybody who’s anybody worships Mykonos, because, here, they can feel free.
Today the legend of Mykonos is very much alive and kicking. In fact every season it attracts its lion share of jovial, good looking faces from around the planet (champagne sipping, paparazzi’ d celebrities included!), who party their nights-and days- away.
To enjoy this cocooned haven with its liberating atmosphere and hedonistic lifestyle is a privilege indeed. So if all this got you into an epicurean sort of mood, here’s another tip:
